Hard to Come By was the third book in Laura Kaye’s Hard Ink series highlighting former Special Forces team members that find their forever love while investigating a cover up on their last mission.

Derek “Marz” DiMarzio was a computer whiz that could hack into anything. He lost his leg in an ambush that ended his military career and killed seven of his fellow team members. Brothers, Honor and Justice were the codes he lived by.

Emilie Garza was the sister to one of their enemies, a fellow military man that went rogue and dirty when his military career ended. She was beautiful, independent, a psychologist and loyal to family.

Derek and Emilie met under contrived circumstances while Derek and his investigative team were secretly looking for Emilie’s brother. Kaye took us through a genuine friendship with tons of chemistry. Kaye also continued the suspenseful theme from previous books to advance the investigation. As typical with the series, the plot progressed answering some big questions but leaving others open for continuation throughout the series. Kaye also introduced other key players for spin-off series, Raven’s Riders MC and Blasphemy.

All in all, I loved the storyline, suspense and the characters and I can’t wait to continue the series with Beckett in Hard to Let Go. In the meantime, I look forward to a quick novella for Charlie and Jeremy, Hard to Be Good.

♦️HERO Derek "Marz" DiMarzio, 34--Former Army Special Forces. Computer genius. Positive, upbeat, outgoing, funny, honest and loyal. Gorgeous with lots of tattoos including tattoos on his junk. Amputee - lost his right leg in an ambush a year ago. Grew up in foster care.
➖Derek is one of my favorite heroes! He's so jovial and funny and never allowed anything to bring him down...no dark, surly, brooding guy here.

"Silver linings, man. He’d always looked for them. Because, really, what choice was there? To wallow in life’s hard knocks and give up? He’d have been down and out at the age of five if that’d been his approach. F**k that."

♦️HEROINE Emilie Saunders Garza, 30--Clinical psychologist. Younger sister to Manny Garza. Recently divorced.
➖Emilie was a tolerable h. I neither loved nor disliked her, but I've definitely read better. Nothing stand-out or remarkable about her.

♦️STEAM Hot, 4/5 - dirty talk, anal play. Derek is an animal in the sack. He's rough, demanding and a dirty-talker!

♦️PLOT The group finally catches up with Manny Garza, using his sister, Emilie. Marz gets close with her but not only for the mission...he's really into her! Bad guys blow up the Hard Ink building, good guys get killed and important new info about Frank Merritt is revealed. Emilie is adopted into the Hard Ink crew and Derek is no longer alone in the world. Lots of action in this one and the body count spikes!

♦️ENDING HFN. No epilogue. No cliffhanger really for the couple, but the overall series story arc continues in Jeremy and Charlie's novella, HARD TO BE GOOD, and then in the final full-length book of the series, HARD TO LET GO.

I have been a fan of the Hard Ink stories since the first, Hard As It Gets. The former spec ops guys with their injuries, memories, anger and the women who have come into their life and their stories. My favorite has been Hard as It Gets........until now. What is amazing to me, is the fact the whole series takes place as of this book, in two weeks time!

Decker DiMarzio is the computer genius/hacker of the group. He lost a leg in the debacle that caused the end of their career by falling on an IED to protect his brother in arms Bailey. Marz misses his leg, but is comfortable with the reason he lost it. Bailey is not so comfortable. The men are still hard at work to find any clue why their deceased commander Colonel Frank Merritt compromised their mission. Hacking into government sites, enlisting outside friends to help, even putting their lives in danger is all part of the mission. They have been trying to figure out how a local drug, gun running, human smuggler gang is involved. They have come up with a key name, Manny Garza, part of the Church Gang. He's a mystery, but they have discovered he has a sister in nearby Annapolis. Her name is Emilie, and she's a clinical psychologist. She's in their sites.

Emilie is deeply troubled by her brother Manny's behavior lately. He has PTSD and at times seems delusional. He appears at her home, occasionally violent and paranoid. She know's she has to act, but she remembers him as a totally different man before the army. While stopping in a cafe for coffee she meets a man who helps with a computer glitch on her laptop. He introduces himself as Derek and is in IT. They are mutually attracted and although Marz is feeling guilty lying to her he's all in.

Their is the usual action, banter and chest pounding, but with the women in the group now their is a softer side. Danger and death is a lot closer to home in this story and shocking news shakes these men to the core. Emilie never realized how strong she was until faced with deadly challenges and Marz is there to protect her. If you like heart pounding action and hot romance this is the series for you. I personally thinks it's best to start with Hard As It Gets.
