John Ringo writes the hell out of military sci-fi. Great characters, grand plots, massive scope...

The only caveats are he's a little light on the technical aspects under is sole name. In this series, for example, the power armor just sort of...appears. It almost literally goes from "I have some ideas" at the end of one chapter to, "It's finished and we're awesome and unstoppable!" It's not a game-breaker, but a detail I found a little odd, especially as I had the *opposite* complaint regarding his Vorpal series, where the plot was often hijacked by physics class.

Okay, and John, if you ever read reviews? Step away from the little girls because their parents are starting to look at you suspiciously. In this we have Callie, some kind of an eight-year old covert ops prodigy or something, killing without even blinking. Not aliens, mind...humans. At eight years old. Every eight year old I've ever met...male or female...is prone to meltdown if you're out of their favorite cereal. (Never mind `Shewolf' in the Darkling Sea series, who manages to simultaneously make *and* break the series.) So...yeah, step away from the kids and let them *be* kids instead of on hiatus from a WB television show.

Stick with your adult characters kicking alien ass in a suitably military fashion. That's where you shine, John Ringo.

Gust Front John Ringo 9780743435253 Books Reviews

I bought this ebook a number of years ago from the publisher's web site. It was a good read then and is a good read now. It apparently is now free as a edition. Baen has a tradition of such freebies as a way of generating interest in book series.

This is not a book that makes a whole lot of sense. You have to appreciate it for what it is, or you won't like it much.

It is full of creative weapons and sometimes creative, sometimes strange tactics, although the primary tactic seems to be sending US units into situations where they are going to die in droves for no good reason.

Why anyone would think it is a good idea to wait until the bad guys land to attack them made little sense to me. If the Galactics have such great technology, no reason not to use it in space to deal with the invaders up front. But, it would not have been much of a story that way.

Plenty of things to appreciate - horse like aliens attack the earth, a Galactic Federation with some really odd civilizations, an ancient secret society, creative weapons. Having said that, the characters are stock characters out of every pulp novel known to man. If you want imaginative or believable characters this is not the book for you.

OTOH, it was a fun read for this time around and before so it got 4 stars from me, even with its many flaws.
This is the second book of this series that I have read and I enjoyed it more than the first book. The author paints a story with a broad brush by covering the life of a family involved in the military action in preparation for the coming alien invasion. He brings in the emotions and actions of the common American citizens trying to wrap their arms and minds around the thoughts about an alien invasion that is almost too difficult to believe in. He exposes the military leadership issues and the political pressures on the government failures to protect the citizens and the country overall. Finally he spends detailed time with the attack from space and on the land invasion on Virginia and Washington DC by the alien hordes.

I liked this book more than the first one that I read. I rate this one as a 4 star story. I liked the detail of the story but at times the military battle facet and acronyms can be overwhelming. I spent a lot of time actually using google maps to overlook the battle scenes to get a mind's eye view of how the battles were unwinding. I also used the dictionary and the internet to look up a lot of military terms. I later found out that there is a nice glossary of terms and maps at the back of the book that covers all that and even the meaning of many of the terms the aliens were using. I wish I had known that the information was in the book but so few books have detailed glossaries and maps that I didn't even think to check for them.

This is a good Science Fiction story with a lot of military action wound into it. I liked this second book and now that I have invested so much time into reading two books I will have to finish the series. This second book is very long and it is 677 pages in length and it took me a while to finish it. I do wish there had been more detail and use of the armored suit soldiers in the story. I have a high interest in that aspect of the saga and it was doled out in teaspoon sized doses except for the end. Interesting but not just enough of the part I liked!
