In the Woods Tana French 9780670038602 Books Reviews

This book was boring! I only finished it because I paid 14 bucks for it! What a waste of money. I mean the story line was ok but it just had endless useless information. I wouldn’t waste money on a second one that’s for sure.
Now this is my kind of book. This is the best book I have read in a very long time! In the Woods has been languishing on my list forever, probably because it has mixed reviews. I am thankful I finally gave it a shot.

Tana French writes beautifully, but in a way that does not hinder the flow of the story. The protagonist, young Irish cop Rob Ryan, tells the story in retrospect. This is done subtly with real-time Rob interjecting only sporadically until the end when he directly delivers the epilogue. I found this technique unique and refreshing. Ms. French pens a stunningly good character study in this novel, presenting her protagonist with profound depth, warts and all. Despite him bringing much of his misery onto himself, my heart couldn’t help but break for him over the last third of the book as he struggled to make sense of what was happening. I haven’t felt that invested in a character in a long while. Though I did not love Rob as much as I love Angela Marsons’ Kim Stone or Cody McFadyen’s Smoky Barrett, my emotions were every bit as wrapped up in him. I know I will never forget Rob Ryan.

Ms. French writes her characters with a great deal of psychological overlay. I looked up her “credentials” and was shocked to find she does not have a background in psychology. Yes, she is that good.

For readers who are interested in a quickly-paced, plot-driven mystery, you won’t find it here. This is a real slow burner, but one that kept me enthralled. The crime plot consists of two threads, one that took place over twenty years previous to the other. Are these events connected? This is a big question. Many readers who did not give the book a good rating had issues relating to a singular loose end in the plot. I usually don’t care for significant loose ends either, but I had no problem with the way this particular story evolved. The ending was true to the character of Rob Ryan; anything else would have been Hollywood. All the other issues were wrapped up beautifully.

I think Tana French writes masterfully. She has quickly risen to “must read everything” prominence on my to-read list. I strongly recommend In the Woods to everyone interested in a hauntingly compelling, character-driven, slow burner of a story. 5 ++++ stars.
Kept assuming there would be a solution to mystery B. Mystery A was obvious. And not to give a solution to the main mystery is truly a betrayal of readers. Im so sorry I wasted money on book 2 thinking that it just might hold the answer. Anyone can drum up mysterious questions . Cheap. Honourable writers give answers. Dont waste your money. Sorry there are no negative stars.
The book starts off detailing a bizarre unsolved tragedy involving 3 kids. To disappear without a trace in the last one is phoned with his fingers dug into a tree. Many years later that loan survivor becomes a detective and find some self involved in a murder case of a young girl from his hometown. The author tries to get us excited that there is some connection to the mysterious disappearance years before. The book moves slowly with out any real excitement or suspense.

Soon the detectives have some possible suspects. The family of the victim is involved of course.

SPOILER ALERT

by the end of the book we do find out who killed the modern girl but never find out anything more about the original mystery. There is no connection. To make this book even less of a thriller, the prime antagonist is obvious, and the author seems to think we will be shocked...

Maybe some people were surprised... I have read a lot of suspense and thriller novels and don't see right through it as easily as I did in this one... If you would like mystery, suspense or thrills look elsewhere. This book has none of that.
I gave up on the book on page 33. This is the most overwritten book that I have tried to read in years. The writing is so burdened with allusions and other literary devices that I actually struggled to follow the story.
Just finished this book today. I give it four stars because it was very well written and rivetingly intense. I could hardly put it down. However, I have to say that I have seldom been more disappointed by a book ending. There was not much of lessons learned, take away value or redemption here...let alone any happily-ever-after. SPOILERS AHEAD The Murder Squad gets their man but loses the psychopath girlfriend who instigated the whole thing because of a technicality that professionals should certainly not have missed. I found it puzzling that the main character would excuse his lack of suspicion of the psycho girl with an aside to the reader to the effect that "she tricked you too." That was so not true! The partnering detectives "break up" in a very silly way and go their separate ways, with one so far demoted that I wondered why he stayed on. AND the opening hook with the disappearance of the children 20 years before is NEVER resolved and remains as much a mystery at the end of the book as at the beginning! All in all, this was an excellent read, but I am not sure if I will read more by this author as I prefer stories with a more positive finale.
The main character is completely unlikeable and the ending is utterly unsatisfactory. Please do not spend money on this book.
