Poison Princess is book 1 in The Arcana Chronicles series. I've been wanting to try this series for awhile since I've seen such good reviews for it and I'm glad I finally got around to it! I love the other Kresley Cole books I've read and this one was no different. I am used to reading her paranormal/contemporary romance books, and this one we switch to a darker Young Adult genre that edged towards more adult so it suited me well.Evangeline Greene aka Evie is 16 and is living a fairly normal life. Well as normal as one could be after spending all summer in a loony bin because her mother wasn't going to let Evie deal with hallucinations anymore. Evie wants everything to get back the way it was, having the perfect boyfriend, being one of the popular girls at school and having great friends. The school year starts and with the exception of some kids from the wrong side of the tracks now going to her school, it all seems like she's getting her wish. That is until she starts getting hallucinations again. The visions are warning her of things that she can't believe are real but must face when an apocalyptic event happens and her nightmares are coming true. This is where we figure out that she actually is part of the Arcana (major tarot cards), she has powers and it seems like she needs to find the other kids that are Arcana as well. I had to question if she was imagining it before, but it all came to light as the novel progressed. This is where the novel gets dark, with the apocalyptic events happening and us learning that not all the Arcana are going to be on Evie's side, we get quite an interesting story.
Poison Princess starts out a bit differently than most books, it opens up in present day then has Evie telling her actual story, the past. It switches back and forth a few times but for the majority of the novel you're reading her recounting the events. I'm intrigued on where the series will go, and cannot wait to get the next book. This is a unique new take on tarot weaved into YA Fantasy that I'd recommend to readers that enjoy all things paranormal.

Here’s the deal I really liked the book with two exceptions. 1) Cajun’s accent. I understand what she was trying to convey, but in my head this supposed hunk had the voice of Billy Bob Thornton in Slingblade. It creeped me out.
2) The “intimate” scenes. Let me get this straight There’s an apocalypse of sorts, with mostly only zombies and cannibals walking around. And yet, in those heated moments, she (repeatedly) asks if he has protection?! Puh- leez. I get it, it’s super PC of the author to do but it just made my eyes roll.
I’m going to read book 2 to see if it gets better, it was definitely a fast read but not sure if it’s for me.
When I ran out of adult Kresley Cole books I broke down and read Poison Princess. Glad I did. It's got a lot of the typical KC stuff, girls who have great, strong personality who aren't simpering misses. Strong, dominant, masculine boy. I love how KC unfolds the dystopian world she's created and introduces the characters. The attraction between Jack and Evie is evident from the start but it isn't the only thing driving the story. There is a lot of loss and sadness in this story too. I can't help but roll my eyes about teenage Jack's almost supernatural ability to MacGyver his way out of any situation. I have teen boys, they can't MacGyver their way out of a paper bag.
WARNING About the NEXT BOOK (some spoilers follow)
I read some reviews of the next book that the story becomes an unresolved love triangle (with a major cliffhanger at the end) and that the heroine has sex with two different guys and it is told somewhat graphically. I feel like I wouldn't worry too much about the sex stuff for my older son but I'm not sure I would want a 14 year old reading not just graphic sex but sex with more than one partner. I put this here mainly b/c this is the kind of stuff you want to know BEFORE you start reading a series and get invested in the characters. I personally hate love triangles and try to avoid books that I know have them. And I think I would not suggest this series to the younger readers b/c of the sex.
The problem with serial books with a continuing main character, especially if there is a love interest or heaven forbid a love triangle, you have to put a lot of trust in an author. You get books like Divergent that were so fantastic to start and then the crazy WTH final book and ending. You get the happy sappy ones like Twilight. Then you have series like Sookie Stackhouse and look how that turned out. I felt like I wasted years of my life with that series. Kresley Cole is a trusted author so I hope she does right by fans with both the serial aspect of this book and the lurrve triangle. But honestly if I'd known where this was all going before I started reading, I might have passed. Or at least wait a few years until the entire series is finished so I can read them all at once. Because the next worse thing is waiting for a YEAR to resolve a cliffhanger.
