This was a nice little Christmas anthology. Good character development, considering the short length of the stories.I loved SUNSHINE FOR CHRISTMAS. It was grand to see Lord Randolph (from The Rake) be given a happy Christmas, and in an unusual setting too.
THE CHRISTMAS CUCKOO was very entertaining. Poor Jack had just become an earl. He didn't want the title; definitely didn't want his overbearing aunt. So he did the reasonable thing, got drunk and ended up with Meg.
THE CHRISTMAS TART was a little out there. French emigre seamstress, fired without references, mistaken by Phillip's friends as a tart, dressed in a white negligee and big red bow, and plopped in the middle of Phillip's bed as a Christmas surprise.
THE BLACK BEAST OF BELLETERRE ~ Yes, it's a beauty/beast story which I can usually do without, but this is a sweet story. Very readable.
Sorry, I can tell you nothing about HOLIDAY FLING. Not even for Putney can I bring myself to read a contemporary romance:)
I empathize with those readers who bought this thinking these were new stories. Returns are very easy though; Amazon is great about them. Fortunately, the stories were all new to me and I enjoyed the three period pieces.
Enjoy your reading! :)

I understand these stories had been printed before. I was lucky a first time read for me. I read them all except the contemporary novella I just don't like contemporary ones. I am sure it has to be good as the rest of the stories were. You will get first love, second chances at love and will be left with a god feeling. I liked the Black Beast of Belleterre. best. A man who was disfigured as a child and hides his face from the world every since. He marries to protect a young girl.He never thinks she could love him even sends her away . He will not allow her to love him just does not think it is possible. A close second is the Christmas Cuckoo where a young girl goes to pick up a friend of her brother's and comes back with the wrong man but with the same name.He is supposed to come and meet her sister but she is the one attracted. He worries what will happen when they find out he is an imposter. I would go back and read these stories even if it wasn't Christmas.
I love reading Mary Jo Putney's books.
Sunshine for Christmas - Was well written and the story line was easy to follow. The story had intrigue, suspense, and romance. It was about two people who had loved when they were young and the life the followed after losing that first love and how they meet at an older more mature age falling in love. And like all love stories there are misunderstandings but at the end happiness.
The Christmas Cuckoo- Was well written and the story line was easy to follow. The story had intrigue, suspense, and romance. It was about major Jack Howard who ends up at a farmhouse of Meg Lambert by accident. She thinks he is her brother's friend Captain Jack Howard. They end up falling in love but mishaps occurs but at the end they get their happily ever after.
The Christmas Tart - Was well written and the story and the story line was easy to follow. The story had intrigue, suspense, and romance. Its about a young French woman Nicole Chambord, without family who dreams of opening a dress shop and a busy Sir Philip Selbourne who through mishaps end up together.
The Black Beast of Belleterre - Was well written and the story line easy to follow. The story had intrigue, suspense, and romance. This was like beauty and the beast.
A Holiday Fling - Did not read. Not my type of story.
All these Christmas stories had some type of miracles, a lonely man and a lonely spinster find love and happiness. In another the miracle is finding love as well as the deed hidden in a clock, changing lives. And in another a physically scarred man finds love when a beautiful woman falls in love with the real him. Just the type of stories to read during the holidays. All these stories were delightfully written.
Quite awhile ago I read The Christmas Cuckoo, which is also contained in this anthology, and it became a favorite. There's always a bit of the magical, and perhaps even the improbable, in Christmas stories, but so what? They convey that sense of "anything's possible at Christmas," a time when even the most irascible Scrooge puts on a smile for the day - or the season - ...
I eagerly bought this collection of 6 stories, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Others have summarized each story, and I found the five I read delightful [I did not read the contemporary, which is the last of the bunch].
The Christmas Cuckoo was as good as ever, and Sunshine for Christmas, which featured Lord Randolph Lennox, who made an appearance in the novel The Rake, has edged out Cuckoo as the new favorite for me. It was a thoroughly satisfying story and if you've not read The Rake, or its prequel The Diabolical Baron what are you waiting for? Both are great stories - traditional [i.e. - not explicit] - what I consider classics of the genre.
Anyway, add this to your collection; you won't regret it.
Highly recommended.
