Fix 'Mancer Book 3 eBook Ferrett Steinmetz
The Fix, Ferrett Steinmetz's conclusion to his superlative 'Mancer series, is a book that came with high expectations. Over the course of his previous two books, Flex and The Flux, I became attached to the cast of characters Ferrett created and the world in which they lived. Ferrett managed to craft a story which keeps its head in the sky and its feet firmly on the ground, yet one which keeps the reader clutching the book because they _must_ know what happens next. Ferrett's storycraft in Fix is breakneck and heartbreaking. When Flex came out, it was advertised as being similar to Breaking Bad (a comparison which holds fast in Fix). As I dug into the story, I could feel the same sick ache that comes with episodes like Ozymandias. Things get bad, and then they get beyond bad, and yet Ferrett finds a way to tie it together with hope and meaning (rather than grim nihilism). I finished Fix feeling satisfied (but still wanting more -- the ending doesn't do nearly enough to conclude things), and wishing that the world of Fix was one I could visit.
I began reading the 'Mancer series because I'm a fan of Ferrett's writing. I kept reading because it's that damn good. The 'Mancer series is one I'd recommend to people even if I wasn't familiar with Ferrett's other work, and that's probably the highest praise I can offer.

Fix 'Mancer Book 3 eBook Ferrett Steinmetz Reviews
Ferrett Steinmetz understands trilogies in his bones. "Flex" was his Star Wars, "Flux" was his Empire Strikes Back, and now "Fix" is his Return of the Jedi. Everything comes together here, in exactly the perfect way it had to, even though it wasn't what you thought it would be. I can't recommend the entire series highly enough.
A note for Ferrett, himself the title for chapter 61 should *clearly* have been "What has it got in its pocketses?" Other than that, the book is dangerously close to perfect.
I downloaded Flex on my phone on a long bus ride to Paris, assuming it would help kill some time. I ended up speeding through the book that weekend, and it speaks to its quality that I don't regret spending lots of my time in Paris reading it.
So, you could say I'm a fan, and naturally I had some high expectations for the final entry in the series. It exceeded all of these in ways I would never have dared to hope for. It's been a pleasure to see Ferrett's writing mature and improve, and it's clear he pulled out all the stops for this finale. It's addictive, well-paced, hilarious, and heart-rending. What are you still reading my review for? Go buy this bloody thing!
I don't like stories about magic. I don't like urban fantasy. But this trilogy I love! The magic system is unique and it's fascinating to see how it gets applied to this slightly alternative universe. The characters are rich and well developed and gloriously diverse, the dialogue genuine and snappy. The plot moves along at a rapid clip - I had a hard time putting these books down. Special kudos to Mr. Steinmetz on this final installment of the trilogy -- there was a much easier, more complacent way to write this last one. It could have been very much good guys vs. bad guys. But he chose to doubledown on the characters' complexity, took a much more interesting path, leaving this reader unsure of who the bad guys and good guys were, with the main characters displaying the moral ambiguity, flaws and internal struggles that real people go through. You should read this trilogy!
I've been waiting for this third and final installment to the 'Mancer series, and Ferrett did not disappoint.
Though it'd been a good few months since I'd read the last book, Fix does a good job reorienting you, reminding you of how things have settled out across the series so far and who the major players are.
If you cherish slow build-ups, you're out of luck with this book. It takes off running, and rarely slows down. It kept me glued to my screen across the three days it took to finish it, and the tortuous path Ferrett leads the characters through absorbed me thoroughly.
Sacrifice, romance, fathomless rage, furious combat and cunning plans-within-plans all wait to delight, horrify, shock, and satisfy the reader.
Ferrett has written well, and Paul, Aliyah, and Valentine got under my skin. I hurt for them, I cheered for them, I cried for them. Beyond the glittery trappings of urban fantasy's magic and artifacts, the 'Mancer series shines with thoughtful characterization, character growth (realistically, not always in positive directions) and fresh takes on ideas that make for fascinating plots I couldn't glimpse the end of.
It is hard for me to say which book of the three I liked the most. Flex was new and shiny and introduced me to the 'mancer world. Fix solved the only issue I had with The Flux in that it did not stay mired and thrash around a little too much when there was a problem to be solved.
I enjoyed the was that Paul was sidelined and his powers cut back after the big ramp up at the end of the second book, and that allowed space for the other characters to step forward into the spotlight. Ferrett has a way of making his characters people you care about, and the final book is certainly emotional as they face stark choices of pain and sacrifice no matter what they choose. The actual ending was well thought out and emotionally satisfied. Pretty much the only sub-plot if did not fully like was the Valentine relationship grinding. With the two people in it being action oriented, it just seemed to be a little too angst filled. It still worked, but they seemed to just be stuck for a lot of the book.
The action and magic scenes are good and the descriptions of the consequences of the rifts over Europe were well thought out and described. As in the other two books, tons of gaming cultural references and even a little bit of Broadway mega hit references in a few chapter titles.
The book left me happy to have spent the time reading all three books and I look forward to Ferrett's next novel.
