For the moment it must suffice to point out that Poitiers and Crecy form unique historical parallels, distinguishing like double summits the English successes of Edward III. sarmy upon the Continent and of the first part of the Hundred Years War. For the political situation which had produced that conflict, and for the objects which Edward III. had in provoking it, I must refer my reader to the first section of my little book upon Crecy in this series ;as also for the armament and organisation of the forces that served the English crown.

Poitiers Classic Reprint Hilaire Belloc Books
This is an excellent short history of Edward III's campaign in which Edward's son, the Black Prince, led a raid into French territory which culminated in the Battle of Poitiers. It's part of a series Belloc wrote, circa 1910, about historic European battles.Belloc examines the limitations of the original documentary sources of the campaign and makes a compelling case to support his interpretations of the events leading to the battle, and of the battle itself.
It is clear Belloc went out and actually walked the sites he described. He writes very clear descriptions of the terrain and its effects on the two armies. One could probably do a tour of the Black Prince's campaign and the site of the battle using Belloc's descriptions in this book.
The only criticism I have of this e-book is that maps, charts and illustrations in the original printed book have not been included in the e-book. The text repeatedly refers to these graphics but they don't appear in the e-book.
But this is a free download so one can overlook that omission. Apart from that, this is an excellent little book that will be worthwhile for anyone interested in Edward III or 14th century European history. Great information but a but wrong regardibg the long bow. Still a great book.
As covered in the Blenheim review - the maps/diagrams are referred to frequently but aren't provided so loses relevance and impact
This is a non-illustrated version of Hilaire Belloc's "The Battle of Poitiers (Illustrated)". I encourage picking up the illustrated version if you're looking for something to use as a reference document.
Hilaire Belloc has the formula down pat. He provides you with a birds eye view of life in Western Europe with special attention to the struggle for the French throne by rival claimants Edward III of England and France's Charles IV. If you are looking for blood and guts and lots of medieval combat action, you will be disappointed. Its charm, however, is in the wealth of detail the author provides in describing vivid scenes of interaction between the prominent political figures of the time. The tactics, geography and results of the battle are accurately laid out and discussed as well as the political ramifications of the ongoing conflict. An excellent read.
I love medieval history & purchase many books on the subject. This book was a disappointment because the type is enormus, the font used is printed in such low quality that even at the gigantic size they've printed it in, the letters bleed together, are uneven & just messy. These two issues combine to make the reading experience uncomfortable. Also, the maps, diagrams & illustrations (though very few illustrations) are poor. I would not recommend this book, especially while there are many excellent books on the battle of Poitiers & I own some of them & thoroughly enjoy them every time I read or reference them. This book (excluding the cover, which is the only thing well done about the book) seems as though it was hurriedly put together, poorly edited & rushed to print, not a pleasant reading experience.
